The Moon can now be observed with greater fidelity, thanks to the National Science Foundation’s Green Bank Observatory (GBO), the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and Raytheon Intelligence & Space (RI&S).
Together, they have released a new high-resolution image of the Moon, the highest ever taken from the ground, which could be made using a new technology radar installed on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT).
“This is the largest synthetic aperture radar image we have produced to date, with the help of our partners at Raytheon,” said Tony Beasley, Ph.D., director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and vice president for Radio Astronomy at Associated Universities.
Using the GBT and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) antennas, several tests have since been conducted, focusing on the surface of the Moon, including Tycho Crater and NASA’s Apollo landing sites.
“As the GBT transmits each pulse, it is reflected off the target, in this case the Moon’s surface, and is received and stored. The stored pulses are compared to each other and analyzed to produce an image. The transmitter, target and receivers are constantly moving as we move through space. While you might think this would make it difficult to produce an image, it actually produces more important data.”

Esta publicación bilingüe describe los aspectos más relevantes de la Huaca de la Luna tras veinticinco años de investigaciones y trabajos de conservación arqueológica dirigidos por la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad Nacional de Trujillo. Junto con la Huaca del Sol, la Huaca de la Luna conforma el complejo arqueológico de las Huacas de Moche. Por sus características y su importancia histórica, este sitio arqueológico se encuentra entre los más importantes de la costa norte de Perú.
La publicación describe el arte, la historia y la evolución de la Huaca de la Luna, haciendo hincapié en su reciente desarrollo desde una huaca abandonada hasta uno de los sitios más reconocidos, investigados e interpretados del país.
