beyond two souls jodie
4There is thus established a separation between the allegory or individuation of souls, on the one hand, and the history of peoples with their final events, on the other. Thus, in the science of the beginning of the 20th century, two senses of the term “eschatology” are opposed: one, applied to Plato7 , the other, to Jewish literature. The fields are divided; they cannot be unified on pain of producing “a contradiction in itself”. In this field, Philo has no place.
6In 1978 Ulrich Fischer published his dissertation on the hopes of Diaspora Judaism for the afterlife. In a chapter devoted to Philo, the author leans towards the traditional interpretation of the German Hebraists and biblical scholars of the beginning of the century: Philo would have received the determining influence of Plato and his result is a worldview completely devoid of historical dimension10. At most one could speak of an eschatology of the present, never of the future. Hans Cavallin offers in 1979 a panorama of the late Jewish and early Christian eschatologies where Philo remains a figure not very far from the one described by Wolfson. A different perspective is presented by Richard Hecht in 1987, in the context of Neusner’s thesis which denies that messianism is constitutive of rabbinic thought. He publishes a study on messianism and comes to conclusions not far from those we have already found in Volz and Fischer, namely, that Philo neutralizes the idea of messiahship through his allegory. By spiritualizing the persons, actions and normativity of the biblical text he prevents any reference to or understanding of the history of Israel, and of history in general, Hecht argues, while criticizing Wolfson’s thesis.

Saki Kirino has lost her father. She decides to take revenge on her main suspect: Mayor Ryouzo Kusunoki, because he and her father had a secret. Hajime tries to convince the mayor to apologize to Saki, but before he can do so, she sends him to Hell, because she is sure he was the murderer and feels she will never forgive him for that. Here we see a change in Ai and the servants, since they know that the mayor is innocent and make him see visions to Saki, although this is in vain. In the end it is implied that Saki’s father’s death was caused by the mayor’s son, although she does not know it. A candle with the name “Kirino Saki” appears.
Yumi and her older twin sister Yuki work in a circus as performers. But, while Yuki is treated as the ringmaster’s spoiled brat, Yumi is mistreated, both physically and verbally. Hajime and Tsugumi mistakenly think that Yumi is trying to send the ringmaster to hell; but in reality, Yumi wants to send Yuki to hell, as Yuki says that “she is an incomplete girl and the world only needs her and not Yumi”. During the revenge, it is revealed that they used to be very close, but Yuki became very conceited and started sabotaging Yumi to be the spoiled one. It is also revealed that the one who knew all the tricks was Yumi, and Yuki knew nothing. When the circus leaves the next day, Yumi becomes the darling of the ringmaster. A candle with the name “Yumi” is lit.

And the choice to release first on PC and Switch could not be more deliberate (and fortunate). The influence of the classic The Legend of Zelda are more than evident, although the structure, objectives or sense of adventure are different. There are two souls coexisting in Eastward: one narrative, with an elaborate plot full of twists, characters full of personality and much denser than we expected before playing it. The other, playable, contained in delimited spaces, which is when the shadow of Kyoto is appreciated, with a system that balances combat and puzzle solving to advance in “dungeons”. All this is linked and cohesive around an artistic sense overloaded in details, meticulous and rich from beginning to end, in which there is a patent homage to the way of building worlds of Hayao Miyazaki (who even has his own NPC in the world, in case his spiritual presence was not evident enough in some aesthetic details).
Eastward is surely one of the most beautiful “2D” games ever made. We use quotation marks because to achieve this result, the studio has not hesitated to combine technologies and engines to achieve a result that would be beyond the reach of more traditional approaches. Having a clear objective, an aesthetic, an idea of the sensations you are looking for your world, and then putting technology at the service of it all. As it usually happens in the projects that stand out the most, this has been achieved by creating our own engine, which meets the creative needs of the team, but also incorporating elements of the open development platform Moai to optimize work and not reinventing the wheel.
