3. Tony and Tommy have been experimenting with balloons. They found that if they fill 5 balloons with helium, they can use the balloons to lift 50 pounds. Three of the same balloons filled with hydrogen lift 60 pounds. Ten filled with neon lift 20 pounds. How many pounds could the men lift with 5 neon, one hydrogen, and two helium balloons?

Ans : 5o pounds

4. A man returned from his greenhouse with a small basket of cherries. To his first friend he gave half his cheries, plus half a pair of cherries, to his second he gave half of what he had left, plus a half a pair of cherries, and to the third he gave half of what he had left, plus half a pair of cherries. This meant he had no cherries left. How many did he start with?

Ans : 7 pairs of cherries He gave 14 cherries to his friends as follows: To the first friend (half of 7) 3 1/2 pairs + 1/2 a pair = 4 pairs (leaving 3 pairs) To the second friend (half of 3) 1 1/2 pairs + 1/2 a pair = 2 pairs (leaving 1 pair) To the third friend (half of 1) 1/2 a pair + 1/2 a pair = 1 pair

6. In the local corner store, six chocolate drops and five fruit jellies cost 61 cents. However, five chocolate drops and six jellies cost only 60 cents. How much does each item cost?

Ans : Chocolate Drops are 6 cents and fruit jellies are 5 cents.

7. If green plus blue makes 89, and red plus black makes 56, What does yellow plus brown make?

Ans : 164 Assigning numbers to letters [A=1, B=2, C=3, etc], yellow plus brown will equal 164.

8. Which number continues this sequence?

Ans : 6 The lower numbers indicate the number of letters in the preceding upper number.

10. If a car had increased its average speed for a 180-mile trip by 5 mph, the trip would have been completed in 30 minutes less. What was the car`s original speed?

Ans : 40 mph. 180 miles at 40 mph = 4 hours, 30 min; 180 miles at 45 mph = 4 hours
